BOOK - MUSIC BY THE MASTERS

Chopin Prelude in C minor, op. 28 No. 20 (Notable comments):

From Paderewski Edition:

Bar 3. The original version gives no flat to the last note in the top part. The flat which is supposed to have been added by Chopin himself in a copy belonging to a pupil (see the commentary in the Oxford Edition) would leave absolutely no doubt as to his intentions. This flat also appears in Tellefsen's edition. The Eb seems to be much more appropriate, because the major tonic, introduced as soon as the third bar of this short but very pathetic work, has too harsh and garish an effect. Evidently Chopin forgot to restore Eb after the E in the second chord of the bar.
